Passion Found in Strange Places

Wow, it had been a long time since I had been to Mile High Stadium on a Monday Night, or is it Invesco Field now? Whatever, corporate BS.

Anyway, It's funny how die-hard footbal fans behave (including myself). You would think they were on opposite sides of a bitter war. If you are a Broncos fan, you can spill another Bronco fan's beer, no problem. You can even become his or her best friend in less time than it takes to let the beer out at half time, just talk about kicking the other teams ass for a few minutes.

But if you are a fan of the opposite team on home terf...watch out! I have never seen so many grown men be so nice to each other in public (As long as your wearing broncos colors), and I have never seen them be so mean...Beer bottles and trash thrown at them, 60-year old men giving everyone the finger in a Chiefs jersey, you name it.
If you were a Chiefs fan last night, you were not allowed to leave the stadium until every last Broncos fan had exited (Security stopped this eventaully).

I cant' lie, I am the same way, and I love it! You boo them when they do bad, you worship them when they win, and you try to harrass and embarrass the opponet, but why?

And then is struck me...Its like peeple who are not objective, (i.e. right wing and left wing hardcore "politial thinkers.") You defend your position until the end..the evidence is insurmountable, yet you dont budge an inch...Just ask a Broncos fan, when the team is down by 75 points and there is 2 minutes left in the game, if there is a chance they can still win...It's the same concept!

I have seen this phenomenon in hockey as well. Most memorably the time the Avs mascot, Howler, beat up a Red Wings fan in the parking lot of McNichols Arena (he was retired after that incident).

As for hoping they will win until the end...that is not my brand of "Homer-ism." I always think the Avs will lose until the end. I remember when they won their 2001 Cup with Bourque, they were up 3-1 with 5 minutes remaining and I still didn't believe it. I wasn't feeling good about it until there was about 20 seconds left. Now I love to watch that game on tape, but at the time, I was a nervous wreck.

I'm sort of a cross between those two mindsets. Whenever my team is down, I feel like there's always a chance, but whenever they're up by anything short of a blowout margin, I think the worst will happen.
